About fifteen years ago, when to drop an album was a major problem as artistes usually have to drop their album strategically on a Tuesday in order to at least have a shot at the #1 spot, even in the US (especially in the US). This is 2018, a year where digital and social media have changed the whole narrative. Even at that, we still find some “big” and “made” artistes who refuse to release their debut body of work.
Oh! I understand releasing an album is not exactly a 2+2 mental sum and can be more difficult than solving a long division mentally. There is a saying that says the best time an artiste (or any performer) to take a bow (and drop the mic) is when the ovation is at the peak (yes, it is a thing). Having said this, it is only logical to drop your album when you are the rave of the moment. So I decided to call out some Nigerian artistes I think are long overdue for an album release.
Though he was at LAMP house studios where he recorded his hook for Pryse‘s 2013 single – eleto and also appeared on “Rich”, a track on MI’s 2014 Chairman album, Koker officially announced his arrival with ” Do Something” in 2015 and has been very consistent having dished out some hits like kolewerk, give them, Bokiniyen, okay, wavy, testimony among others. Koker who officially became an artiste under Chocolate City Music Group in 2014 is definitely an artiste good music lovers await his debut album.
Having signed to one of Nigeria’s foremost record labels, Chocolate City for about 4 years and also being nominated for Rookie of the year at The 2016 Headies, Dice Ailes who has at least 7 hit songs to his name among which Telephone, Ella, Otedola, Miracle is definitely ripe for an album. It is worthy of mention that he is currently on a tour (headlining his concert) round Nigerian universities.
The self-acclaimed Mayor of Lagos is unarguably one of the most talented singer in the scene right now. Since his entrance to the Nigeria music mainstream with “eleko” two years ago, born Mayowa Adewale has consistently released chart topping singles like yawa, love you tire, Mama, che che, Sade among others. The 24-year-old artiste who is signed to Davido’s DMW movement also headlined his first concert last year December. You will agree with me that even Adekunle Gold didn’t do up to all these before he served us a very successful album in 2016. So, Mayorkun why not?
Tinny Entertainment Mafia, Ycee who came to the scene with his first offering “Condo” with Patoranking and barely two months later, he gave us the track that really made him known (Jagaban). The 2016 rookie of the year and multiple Headies award nominee has served us Two EPs; The First Wave & Late Night Vibrations (with label mate, Bella Alubo) and a lot of singles like Omo Alhaji, link up, su mi, fearless, and recently say bye bye. Having headlined his own concert in UK last year December, I think Ycee by several standards is qualified to drop a debut album.
Up & Front Management and MMMG front liner, Tekno who entered the music scene with “dance” in 2014 has incessantly proved that his singing and production prowess is second to none. He has a lot of accolade to his name and has bagged numerous awards some of which are Best new act (2014 NEA), Best pop extra video (NMVA), Hottest single, Afropop artist of the year (2016 NEA), Best new act (2016 MAMA) among others. Tekno indeed has everything (from media attention to good music among other factors) working for him; I mean Drake “came closer” last year… I’m definitely rooting for his debut album.
