9 Killed As Christian And Muslim Youths Clash In Kaduna State
No less than nine persons have been reportedly killed while several others were injured during a clash between some Christian and Muslim youths at Kasuwan Magani area in Kajuru local government of Kaduna state on Monday, February 26, 2017.
While several houses were also razed during the fracas that started around 10am, it was learnt that if not for the prompt intervention of security forces the ugly melee would have escalated beyond control.
The Kaduna State police command confirmed the crisis but said it was too early to ascertain the actual number of persons that lost their lives and those injured.
The PPRO of the command, Aliyu Mukhtar said, “the situation has been brought under control. We got a distress call this morning and the Commissioner of Police directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police operations to move to the area.
” As I talk to you now, the ACP is already there”.
However, he did not give the casualty figure of the incident.
Though there were conflicting reports on the immediate cause of the crisis, sources linked the incident to clash over girlfriends between Muslim and Christian youths in the community.
While a version of the story claimed that a Christian girl was abducted and converted to Islam and taken to the residence of a Muslim leader, from where the crisis got heated up, another version alleged that Christian youths were moving around to beat up their girls suspected to be going out with Hausa Muslims in the area.
Meanwhile, the State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, has directed the prosecution of all persons responsible for the mayhem. He charged security agencies to investigate the incident, arrest and prosecute the perpetrators.
A statement by the senior special assistant on media and publicity to the governor, Samuel Aruwan, said el-Rufai condemned the violence and regretted the wanton destruction of lives.
“The government has directed the State Emergency Management Agency to take inventory of damage and provide relief materials, with immediate effect. Security forces have been deployed to contain the situation, protect life and property and to prevent any further breakdown of law and order,” he said.
