The Lagos State Police PRO, Dolapo Badmus has restated ina recent interview that no police officer has the legal right or obligation to check any citizen’s mobile phone as it is a violation of the person’s privacy.
She made this statement in a YouTube video interview. In her words:
“Your phone is private, it’s your private property because people do a lot of private stuffs on their mobile phones so it’s wrong. Police officers have no right to do that except there is a reasonable ground to do so“.
She further went on to state some possible reasons police officers may go through mobile phones during a ‘stop and search’ operation.
“In an instance when a crime has just been committed and someone gives the police info which may lead to an investigation of said crime. Anything other than that, no policeman has the right to call you and request to go through your phone.“
